Two Types of Implants
Dr. Zavell can help you decide whether silicone or saline implants are best for you.
Silicone vs. Saline Breast Implants
Women who desire breast augmentation will need to select which type of implants they want. We offer two types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Dr. Zavell will review the pros and cons of saline and silicone implants with you during your consultation so you can make an informed decision.
Saline
These implants have a silicone shell and are filled with a saltwater solution. Soft and durable, saline implants are available in round or teardrop shapes. These implants are typically filled once placed in the breast pocket. Therefore, breast augmentation with saline implants requires smaller incisions. If a saline implant ruptures, it is immediately apparent. Should this occur, the saline is simply absorbed into the body.
Silicone
Filled with a silicone gel, these implants offer an incredibly natural look and feel. They are also less prone to rippling than their saline counterparts. Silicone implants are pre-filled, so larger incisions are necessary to place them during augmentation. Implants filled with silicone gel closely resemble a natural breast, but a rupture may not be noticeable right away and is considered to be a higher risk.
A Note on Silicone

While the FDA does approve the usage of silicone gel for surgery, it does not recommend that patients under 22 years of age receive silicone implants.

What Are the Risks of Breast Augmentation?
Like any plastic surgery procedure, breast augmentation is associated with certain risks such as bleeding, infection, and allergic reaction. In addition, patients could develop capsular contracture, a condition in which the scar tissue around the implant tightens and hardens.
By choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon like Dr. Zavell, you greatly reduce your chances of suffering complications.
Caring for Your Body and Breast Implants Following Your Surgery
Each patient's recovery timeline will look different depending on the techniques and breast implants that were used. After your breast implant procedure, be sure to follow all instructions given to you by your plastic surgeon. This will help your body heal quickly and allow for optimal breast augmentation results.
In the Days Following Surgery
After your surgery, you may experience mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort that can be controlled with pain medication prescribed by Dr. Zavell. These symptoms should subside within a few weeks. Be sure to get plenty of rest for a few days and wear the compression garment you were given following your augmentation. Wearing this garment at all times for several weeks after your augmentation can result in an easier healing period and allow your breast implants to settle properly.
One Week After Surgery
Within a few days to a week, many patients feel comfortable resuming light activities and going back to work. Patients can return to work relatively soon as long as their job doesn't require strenuous activity or overhead lifting. Physically demanding occupations will need more healing time. Though a light workout may be manageable, avoid rigorous exercise for several weeks to minimize the risk of bleeding at the surgical site.
One Year After Surgery
Many patients worry about visible scarring. Once your incisions have healed, you may apply a cortisone cream to minimize the appearance of your scars. Additionally, be sure to attend all follow-up appointments to ensure that your breasts are healing properly. Dr. Zavell will continue to give you instructions to help your healing process.
The final results of your breast augmentation won't be apparent for about three to four months. This gives the body enough time to heal and gives your breast implants time to settle into their proper position.
